New ACL and MCL installed!
2012.05.03 - Posted by teama8AMAfter 4 months of healing from the previous surgery, the day finally came for my new ACL and MCL to be installed. That was 3 weeks ago, April 10th. Now that I'm off the good pain medications, I thought I'd update you all with a much overdue post.
A long overdue update:
2012.04.27 - Posted by teama8ASIt’s been so long since my last post, I’m not sure where to begin. I’ll keep the catch-up portion short. Since my last post, I’ve completed my indoor season (a minor set-back with a bum hamstring, rehabilitation and recovery, a national indoor championship title and a World Indoor appearance-whew), and transitioned to the outdoor season.
We all need a little help from our friends
2012.04.19 - Posted by mpetitI love writing training plans. For other people. In fact I spent an extra 6 years in school after college because I so enjoy learning about the science and art of exercise. We spend a lot of time in our work helping people understand how important a thoughtful, progressive training plan is for optimizing health and performance (regardless of their goals).
What not to do when running a half marathon
2012.04.13 - Posted by jcteama8I love the great running community in the Twin Cities. There are so many fun races every weekend. I am always tempted to jump in and run one of the races even when I haven't been training or I am injured. I jumped into one recently. It was a half marathon on St. Patrick's Day.
Here are some thing I wouldn't recommend doing when running a half:
Meet my new ride: The Potsmobile
2012.03.18 - Posted by teama8jhSo I recently got a new bike. It's pretty sweet. And I think it's really going to help me exercise with my health condition. Most of you who know me know that I have a medical condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia, or POTS. This condition is a dysfunction of the involuntary nervous system which is responsible for controlling the tightness of blood vessels in the body (among many other things). WIth POTS, blood pools in my legs and my stomach when I am upright and can make me tired and sometimes lightheaded.
Running Updates
2012.02.24 - Posted by jcteama8Well, it has been too long since I updated my blog. Here is a brief update:
Post Mexican Vacation and Patience
2012.01.20 - Posted by teama8ASWhew, what a hiatus. Finally, I am feeling back in the groove after 3 solid weeks of training post Mexican-Christmas vacation. My coach and I strategically planned my training schedule around the week-long vacation, (so it could be used as a down/recovery week). That part of the plan worked out really well. It was great to take the time to let the body calm down a bit. But then there was the "re-entry"...there's something about workouts on the beach that make it a little challenging to come back to indoor track workouts. At least the sand offered me some consistency! :)
Surgery Results are in...It's a Success!
2011.12.01 - Posted by teama8AMStep 1 is in the books. I had my check-in today with my surgeon to see how things were looking 9 days post surgery. The good news is that my knee is in great shape - my miniscus and cartilage are looking smooth which will go a long way later in life. I'm off my pain medication (aka fun medicine induced naps are over) and I like to believe I am walking without a limp (most of the time). I've got a new membership to a gym booked, PT scheduled and have four months to keep my legs strong for Round 2.
The countdown to the knife
2011.11.20 - Posted by teama8AMThe surgeon's knife is right around the corner. On Tuesday, I have surgery 1 of 2 to repair my broken ACL and MCL. Now before any surgery, you've got to make sure the basics are covered. Here's a few that I recommend:
Physical: Doctors say all signs a go
Ride: Julie MF Hughes will be my chariot of choice
Helping Hands: A bed has been placed in my sister's living room. Good luck not helping out.
Entertainment: Magazines. New Book. And the first season of 'How to Make it in America.'
Love/Hate
2011.11.19 - Posted by teama8ASI have a new found love/hate relationship with fall training. (formerly thought of as hate/hate)
Fall training is always very physically challenging for me. Some of my absolute least favorite workouts show up this time of year, but I have a belief that they are an essential piece to the adaptation puzzle so of course, I stick to them...and all of the discomfort they bring.
Monster Dash Half Marathon
2011.11.02 - Posted by jcteama8I love to run Halloween races! It gives me an excuse to wear a costume and run! The past couple years I dressed as a pirate for this race but this year I wanted to be something different. I really wanted to be Tinker Bell but questioned whether the wings would be a good idea for running. I decided to just go for it because I could ditch the wings mid-race if they were annoying.
Missing: One ACL
2011.10.30 - Posted by teama8AMIt's official. MRI results are in and the surgeon has spoken. I require reconstruction surgery on my left knee. My anterior cruciate ligament has exploded and my medial collateral ligament could use an upgrade as well. The repairs will need to be done in two surgeries since this is my second go-round with ACL reconstruction on this knee. Step 1 to replace the old hardware with bone graphs and Step 2 to rebuild my ACL and MCL. Reality has set in and I have ~11 months of rehab ahead.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves...
2011.10.27 - Posted by mpetitOur business partners at Performance Unlimited (www.performanceunlimitedteam.com) talk often about how the stories we tell ourselves often limit what’s possible in our lives. I had an awareness experience around that this morning….
Biking at the cabin
2011.10.24 - Posted by pikeOne day (this weekend) I went to the cabin. And I rode on the trail and it was raining, you know why? Because the clouds were out.
The day before I followed my cousin Caelan who was on mama’s bike because she can ride her bike. And I followed her. And then I was the leader and she followed me. We played Follow-The-Leader.
Um, I went down the big hill really fast and I turned and turned and turned and got an owie right on my ankle and it really hurt. Even though I was still crying, I wanted to do it again. I wanted to go way back up top of the hill so I could do it again.
A change for the better!
2011.10.24 - Posted by teama8ASI am officially beginning my 4th week of training for the 2012 season. There is a change in my training this season – I’d call it a major change and it is a change for the better! Between my former training partner and good friend, Shani and my husband, Greg, I have a training partner at nearly every training session. I had forgotten how much better it is to workout with friend than it is to have to “go it alone”.
My New Love!
2011.10.18 - Posted by JanabananaHi everyone! I am excited to be a member of Team A8. Thanks to my daughter Julie, I am getting in the best shape of my life. I am a mother of 6 children and find I cope with them much better when I am active! I have never enjoyed biking until I stole my daughter's recumbent bike, which I love, love, love. Did I say love? Now I look for every opportunity to ride it on the beautiful bike trails of Madison. I look forward to keeping you posted on my new life changes. I hope to inspire others to become more active. PS I will let you know if I ever give up the wine! Jana
Regional Recap!
2011.10.12 - Posted by teama8AMOur intense 3x3 practices - three hours, three times a week - have paid leading up to our Regional Tournament. This past weekend, our All Star team competed against the top 10 teams in the North Central Regional tournament in Indianaplis. We walked in with a #3 seed and walked out with the Silver Medal. Our road to the championship bout included a victory over #6 over Madison and a win against #2 Detroit. We battled Chicago's team during the championship and gave away a half-time lead to lose a close one.
Autumn Trail Series
2011.10.11 - Posted by jcteama8Fall is my favorite season! The leaves are changing! The weather is great for running! It is cross country season which means trail running. I haven't done much trail running since college so when I heard about the Autumn Trail Series, I knew I had to run it. It is a series of 4 races that are held at Hyland Park in Bloomington, MN. Every other Wednesday night we race a 5.7k loop on trails through the park.
preparing to launch the 2012 season
2011.09.29 - Posted by teama8ASI don't have a whole lot to report on these days. I've been resting. For me, that has meant 2 weeks of absolute rest. Followed by 2 weeks of general activity (walks, rollerblades, light spinning etc). No stress, active living and I've been enjoying it. Mostly, I appreciate the extra time I find in my day and not planning my day around my training. But...enough is enough and I'm ready to get back into action. The rest and recovery weeks have served their purpose. I'm rested and I'm recovered.
World Champs Recap
2011.09.06 - Posted by teama8ASI know I talk a lot about learning, but this is truly the best word to describe my World Championship experience. Everything from life in the athlete village, adapting to awful foods and competition protocols were among the new experiences for me. I'm taking each lesson and packing it away in my mind so I'll be ready next time. And as for the competition itself, well there too was learning. I won't go into those details, but after seeing the video of my jumps, it's clear I made some technical mistakes. Anyway, let's talk about how amazing it was to compete at that level.
What are you waiting for?
2011.09.05 - Posted by teama8cpHave you always wanted to try something and just haven't done it yet? I stumbled upon this link this weekend and thought I'd share it. It's only 3 minutes or so.

Derby Off the Track
2011.08.31 - Posted by teama8AMI had the realization today that I have truly taken my derby training off the track. We practice three times a week for 2-3 hours a time, but with our home and tournament season around the corner, preperation is ramping up. At work, this translates into taking the stairs instead of the elevator to my fifth floor desk. Post work, fitting in some additional cardio and strength training twice a week is my goal to get a little bit stronger to handle the hits in my future (I'll admit, this is often a stretch goal as life seems to come up on non-practice nights).
My first (official) bike race
2011.08.31 - Posted by pikeHi! I did a bike race. I maybe might've won if I knew where I was going. It was fun. The funniest part was when my Papa Erik raced on my bike. I laughed my head off.
Commander Who?
2011.08.26 - Posted by teama8AMLet me start by saying I'm very excited to be part of Team A8 and shed some light on my style for training for life. One could say I've had an athletic past - While friends were changing majors in college, I was changing sports teams. College basketball, pole vaulting and soccer kept me active during the college years. Fast forward five years and I was looking for my next adventure. Insert Roller Derby.
Leadville 100
2011.08.17 - Posted by syteama8The 2011 Leadville 100 mtb race is in the books. Of the 6th Leadville's I have done, it was by far the hardest, but most rewarding of them. Crossing the line with Janine after a grueling 1/2 day on the bike, was an incredibly positive and emotional experience.
Gratitude
2011.08.07 - Posted by teama8cpHave you ever stopped to think about what you have in this life/world and what you are grateful for? If not I encourage you to try this exercise. Each night write down 5 things you are grateful for. Can be anything--your job, health, spouse, kids--whatever. Each morning take 5 min to review and think about those 5 things from the night before. Repeat for 2 weeks using 5 different things each night. I promise you will see a shift in your attitude/outlook from doing this.
Countdown to the Leadville 100
2011.08.07 - Posted by syteama8We are putting the final tweaks on the new Ellsworth prior to the Leadville 100 Mountain bike race next weekend. Janine and I have targeted Leadville as our A race this summer. Individually, our training has progressed well and both feel ready.
Training when you have young kids and full time jobs can be challenging. We do most of our training at night, after the boys go to bed. On the weekends, we take turns doing our longer training rides.
Famliy race night
2011.08.05 - Posted by syteama8A solid night of family mountain bike racing at Buck Hill last night. Janine - 2nd in Intermediate woman, Abel - solid ride in the beginners race, Eyob - solid ride in the kids (3 and 4 year olds) race, with his buddy Kieran. Me? DFL in the adults racing on kid's bike race... the 12 inch wheels did not treat me well.
Keep the Arthritis AWAY!
2011.08.04 - Posted by teama8akHello to all of you healthy folks. I just finished my last session of training with two very handsome men in theirs 70s, Pat and Jim. Both started out 4 weeks ago dripping in sweat from just one CET (Corrective exercise training) workout. They weren't in pain, but they worked hard. The first session took a bit longer than usual since I had to explain each exercise we were doing, what muscles they were working, and why these muscles are important to strengthen.

Ghent meet
2011.08.01 - Posted by teama8ASArgh. Another 13.84m jump. A little frustrated with the outcome of the meet, but I've stewed on it enough to think through some technical things I'd like to improve for my next competition and have decided to move on and leave that one behind me.
One of the cooler experiences of the day was being able to cheer on Laura (a former teammate of mine) in the 1500m race and a former U of MN athlete Gabe Anderson. Having the familiar faces there was pretty fun.
Meet day!
2011.07.30 - Posted by teama8ASToday is meet day and I am really excited for my competition in Ghent, Belgium (http://www.toastit-live.be/results/2011/jul/za30/schedule.html). If you use the link to check out results, my event is the hinkstapspringen.

Training days in the Netherlands
2011.07.27 - Posted by teama8ASSo, I've found my new home for a few days in between competitions. It is in Sittard, Netherlands. I am staying in an athlete house with some of the Dutch track and field athletes. After a long travel day two days ago and a shake out day (which consisted of an extended warm up and cool down), I was back in action today with a solid training day.
Beginning of Euro jumping adventures
2011.07.27 - Posted by teama8ASHey everyone! This entry is a few days old, but I thought I'd post it anyway to give a snapshot of the first few days of my travels.
Walks, Runs and Basketball!!!
2011.07.27 - Posted by jcteama8Tuesday was a busy day but I made a lot of time to meet with friends for some fun activities. I started the day with a walk before work with my awesome friend Kirsten. She is pregnant and is trying to stay active throughout her pregnancy. It was great to get to chat with her while going for a walk.
First blog ever
2011.07.25 - Posted by teama8cpWell, here goes.
Weekend was fantastic! I saw U2 at TCF Stadium with a good friend from college. What an amazing show, Bono and they boys were fantastic. Even during the downpour during half of the show, they fed off that and the energy intensified. I can now cross seeing U2 live off my bucketlist.
Pac-Man on Bikes
2011.07.22 - Posted by jcteama8This weekend is the annual bicycle Pac-man game in south Minneapolis.
Team A8 Launches
2011.07.01 - Posted by mpetitWelcome to Team A8! Read about our team A8 members who make physical activity a priority in their busy lives. Whether you relate more to Amanda Smock who recently won the US National Triple Jump Championships despite finishing a PhD and having a full time job, or to Grandma Libby who enjoys the social part of her running group as much as (and often more than) the runs themselves. She counts chasing after her many grandchildren as an important part of her physical activity. We also have Amanda Meyer (aka Commander Nix), full-time business woman, part-time RollerGirl.....and many more.
